It was a dark gate. Stepping through it would mean not an instant, relativistic jump across the interstellar void, but rather a slow, cumbersome quantum unravelling which would send us at mere lightspeed to our destination. It might take centuries—or perhaps millennia—before we woke up on the other end.

There would be no going back.
